Welcome to week 4, our final week working on our Anne of Green Gables quilt pattern. This week we will be focusing on assembling our HSTs, patchwork blocks & borders, to make our quilt top. This is my favorite part of making a quilt, seeing it all come together. Let's get started.
A must have for assembling a quilt top is a design wall, if you have never tried one you are missing out. It makes laying out blocks and rearranging them soooo easy. For my fancy design wall, I used a dollar store flannel-backed vinyl table cloth. We do have some _____ in stock if you're looking for a higher quality design wall. I wanted to give it a try first before committing, I've used mine now for four different quilts. The cons of a dollar store table cloth: the backing from the table cloth easily is pulled off by tape & the largest size isn't quite big enough for a quilt. Just some things to keep in mind. I will definitely be upgrading in the future.
Once you are pleased with your block configuration, it's time to sew! This part is pretty straightforward. I sewed two rows at a time, from top to bottom, first marking each of my rows. As I sewed them together, I than placed them back up on my design wall. I find this helps me to keep organized and motivated, I can see the design coming together as I sew each row. Quick Tip: For reduced bulk, make sure that you remember to press each row the opposite way so that the seams nest together.
I got a little excited when I was adding my borders, so excited I forgot to take pictures. For a visual aid, see the picture above for the following steps:
Start with the narrow "green" inner border:
- Take these 3 measurements: length of left side edge, middle & right side edge.
- Find the average of the 3 measurements listed above. Use that answer as the length for each of your side borders.
- Piece together your border strips (we cut these week 1), to be equivalent to the length found in step 2.
- Pin & sew these to the sides of your quilt top.
- Repeat for top & bottom edges.
Repeat steps 1 - 5 for the large "eggplant" outer border.
Voila! You should now have a completed quilt top of the Anne of Green Gables quilt pattern.

That is a lovely quilt! I treated myself to some of that fabric!
